Surviving the Slow Times by Keeping Perspective and Staying Focused Each of us has been personally affected by the economic slowdown. Some have lost money in the stock market; others have lost a percentage of their wages while others have lost jobs. We must keep things in focus. I was reminded of this recently in New Jersey as I was checking in at the airport. I saw a group of Harley motorcycles, police cars and a single limo parked at the curb in front of the airport. I initially thought that some famous politician or rock star must be in the limo, only to discover that the limo had a 23-year old war hero who was returning from Iraq. Both of the hero’s legs had been lost in a roadside bombing. I was moved by the sacrifice of this young man and the compassion shared by the people of New Jersey. For a moment, I wasn’t concerned about the financial markets or the automotive industry. I reflected on my own son who is just starting college, the young men and women in the military who have recently paid the highest price for our country and the tremendous privileges associated with living in our country. The turmoil that we are going through will pass but how do we stay focused and positive? We can get sucked into believing that the end of times is upon us or we can continue.... more
